YOU HAD ME AT BONJOUR - Ep. 8 - "Love Actually"

Dec 14, 2023

Love actually is, all around you. If Amy didn’t know it before, she knows it now.

In the midst of the pandemic, Amy struggles with her own health challenge and a huge scare for her beloved cat Colonel Puff Puff and comes to some profound revelations that will affect all her relationships.

Amy and I continue to get real real about surgery, recovery, community and why asking Amy Dresner for an “advance directive” is fodder for comic genius.

My guest Amy Dresner is a journalist, author, and former comedian as well as a recovering addict and alcoholic. She was a regular columnist for the addiction/recovery magazine theFix.com since 2012 and has freelanced for Addiction.com, Psychology Today, Vice, Salon and many other publications.

Her first book, “My Fair Junkie: A Memoir of Getting Dirty and Staying Clean,” was published by Hachette in 2017 to rave reviews from critics and readers alike. Elle magazine compared Dresner’s darkly comic memoir to Carrie Fisher’s “Postcards from the Edge” and Mary Karr’s “Lit,” calling Dresner’s book “one for the ages.”

Dresner has appeared on the television show The Doctors and on numerous radio shows and podcasts, including Dr. Drew, Dopey and Rich Roll. She does regular speaking engagements around the U.S. She is the co-host to Joe Schrank of the new Rehab Confidential Podcast. Her book is currently in development for a TV series.

In This Episode:

[0:55} Amy’s experience of pre-op is frustrating but hilarious as usual.

[2:06] The Colonel is sick and it’s not a hairball this time…

[4:00} Amy admits she relapsed on vaping.

[5:27] Yes, “fur babies” are especially important to those of us in recovery.

[6:57] We’re looking for the opportunity in the challenge here and we find it.

[9:05 ] Amy didn’t used to like women, until she had to live in an all girls sober living…

[12:11] Amy calls herself a “blowhard” but we keep working to collaborate and take turns.

[13:46] We come back to Amy’s relationship with her body, now that it is front and center.

[18:36] I share with Amy about my coma and that time I was paralyzed in a car accident and how it brought me closer to my higher power.

[21:07] Nobody is immune. We all have hard times. And we all have community and spirituality and recovery if we choose it.
